ARTEMIS Interim Plenary Report

The ARTEMIS Interim Plenary meeting took place in Lecce, Italy on the 19th-20th June following the project launch in February. Franco Niccolucci, the Scientific Coordinator, and Luca Pezzati, the Project Coordinator, welcomed everyone before Franco proceeded to provide an overview of the activities, reporting that the project was going well and was ahead of schedule at Month 6. One of the highlights from the individual presentations that followed was the work being done on Artificial Intelligence to scan text and automatically extract annotations that were compatible with standard ontologies and could be used for creating metadata about the scanned documents. This would save researchers a lot of time and effort and make their work more rapidly accessible.

Most of the presentations concerned the technical aspects such as how the infrastructure was being set up and how the services were being implemented. The framework for the selection and implementation of the pilot studies will ensure that as a collection, these will cover the predefined criteria. From 33 initially identified candidates, 26 are being considered for pilots after scrutiny, refinement and consolidation. Training, another important aspect in ARTEMIS, is required to enable full use of the ARTEMIS infrastructure and ensure take-up. The first summer school is planned for June 2026 and various forms of delivery (e.g. online guides, workshops and seminars) will be used according to the requirements of the different end users.  Finally, the participants were given an update on the dissemination activities and some preliminary survey results. The survey is open until the 18th July.  The recent webinar on RHDT provided a significant boost to the number of followers on social media, the next webinar is scheduled for the 3rd July at 15:00 CET – ” When Heritage Thinks – AI, Ontologies & Reactive Digital Twin“.
